WITI-TV, RACINE COUNTY -
The Highway G interchange in northern Racine County is the newest construction site along the I-94 corridor to Illinois. Department of Transportation crews are preparing to tear down the overpass bridge this weekend. Because of this, there will be full freeway closures this weekend.
Project Manager Mark Klipstein says this part of the I-94 project is getting an earlier start than expected. "It came up because of the stimulus money. The money became available the project was on the shelve and because of that being an overpass structure it was a good project to put in the program and to get built at this time."
Despite the heavy rain earlier in the construction season, the entire I-94 project is back on schedule. There will be lane closures, shut downs and plenty of delays. But D.O.T. officials promise a big pay-off on the road.
Klipstein says, "Just bare with us, be patient. Sometimes it's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel because of all the inconvenience you have to have early on. But once we're done it will be a nice gateway to Wisconsin."
