WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn and Mayor Tom Barrett thanked two citizen heroes who took action in the moments after two police officers were shot on the city's south side Tuesday.

American United taxi driver Anthony Thompson and UPS driver Mike Charbonneau stepped in front of the microphone to talk about why they took action moments after they came upon the officers being shot near 2nd and National. Thompson used his taxi to block off the area near the officers so no other cars would get in the way. Chief Flynn said Thompson held the hand of one of the wounded officers after the shooting. Thompson said he doesn't consider himself a hero. He said he did what any decent person would do. Thompson says his thoughts and prayers are with the officers and their families.

In the moments after the shooting, Charbonneau tracked the suspect in this shooting and urged residents nearby to help him keep track of where the suspect was headed. Charbonneau also said he was just trying to do what he could to help the officers in their time of need.

Chief Flynn said this is the perfect example of citizen involvement. He told reporters the police officers cannot do the job of protecting neighborhood on their own. Flynn said the city stood up and took action.

Mayor Tom Barrett was emotional in his moment in front of the microphone. He wants to know what's wrong with this society with all the guns on the streets. He was emotional in referring to the injured officers. You can hear his comments by clicking the link to his video just below.

21-year-old Bryan Norberg and 26-year-old Graham Kunisch remain hospitalized at Froedtert Hospital Wednesday afternoon. Norberg's condition has been upgraded to good. Kunisch remains in critical condition.
