WITI-TV, BROOKFIELD -
Six high school seniors from Brookfield East are told they will be able to take part in their school's graduation ceremony despite taking part in a school prank. However, the valedictorian, who was involved in the prank, will not be allowed to give his speech at commencement.
Around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, using their own ladder and tools, the seniors climbed up on the roof of Brookfield East High School early Wednesday and built a $240 swing set. Among the six students were the two top in the class. Along with the swing set, the students left brownies and soda. They also included a note for the administration. It thanked the administration for putting up with the senior class for four years and for all their work.
The students say they were doing their best to be safe and not break anything. To them, the prank was harmless.
"We thought certainly that building a swing set on the top of the school which the janitor broke down in less than 10 minutes... Certainly that's not going to warrant a suspension or a $300 ticket," said Alexander Holiday.
"We were kind of surprised very shocked actually that such a harsh punishment would come from such a harmless prank," said Mark Holiday.
