American Quilts unfolds the stories within these textiles, which illustrate life in the early American republic (17601850). The women who made these quilts used their needlework skills to make political statements, celebrate marriages, and express religious faith, ultimately transforming an array of fabrics, both common and exotic, into extraordinary works of art. American Quilts explores how quilts were skillfully and lovingly made to commemorate the life-changing events of individuals, families, or entire communities.
